Good to note that one of
London most highly regarded fish restaurants Back
to Basics is keeping up standards. Fish is delivered
daily and there are usually 15 + choices for main
courses, which run from £13.50 to £16.95
and include large portions of such treats as sea bass,
tuna, mahi mahi, red snapper, john
dory, gilt head bream and halibut as well as organic
salmon, baby haddock, swordfish, monkfish, skate,
dover sole and king scallops. For a recent meal we
enjoyed a colourful and tasty fish stew of I lobster,
crab, mussels, clams and king prawns cooked with white
wine and garlic butter (£16.95).
Given the large portion size our own lunch choice
is just a main course with the huge hunk of fresh
hot. crusty brown bread with three flavoured butters
(£3.95) but there is a range of more than a
dozen hot and cold appetisers from a pint of PYO (Peel
Your Own) prawns at £5.50 to Crab Thermidor
at £7.95. There are also hot and spicy crab
claws (£7.25) mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat,
spinach and parmesan (£6.75) home made gravadlax
(£7.45) dressed crab (£7.95) steamed mussels
(£6.25) and a large bowl of fish soup (£7.45)
that with the aforementioned hunk of bread could make
a main course.
Desserts include such as bread and butter pudding
with whisky sauce (£4.50) oranges and Grand
Mamier pancake with ice cream (£4.95) bananas
baked in foil with rum (£3.95) and chocolate
terrine with toffee and brandy sauce (£3.95).
Best tip? Go at 12.00 midday when they open -the fish
will be at its freshest and you'll get maximum choice.
